Night tariffs and the heat pump — how to benefit

In a heat-pump home, part of consumption can be timed to a cheaper hour. The simplest place is hot water, then floor heat storage.

Hot water at the cheaper hour

The tank is a heat store. If production is timed to the cheaper period, the same energy becomes cheaper without changing comfort.

Light floor pre-heating

A concrete floor can be loaded 0.5–1 °C more during cheap hours. We don't recommend a larger swing, since it lowers efficiency.

A realistic expectation

Timing doesn't reduce the kWh used, only their price. The estimated effect on the annual bill is usually a few percent up to around ten percent, depending on the tariff.

Frequently asked questions

Is an exchange-price package worth buying?+

It depends on how much consumption you can shift. If you only time hot water, the effect is smaller.

Does timing wear the unit more?+

Not if set up sensibly. Very frequent starts should be avoided.
