Tracking and comparing electricity consumption

Without measurement, every optimisation is a guess. A simple monthly table gives enough basis to see whether changes are working.

What to measure

Monthly total consumption, average outdoor temperature, and the heat pump's own meter reading, if available. Three columns in a table are already enough.

How to compare fairly

Two months aren't comparable if the weather was different. Divide consumption by degree days, or compare months with similar average temperature across different years.

When to raise the alarm

If kWh/m² rises more than 15% year over year in similar weather, it's worth checking settings and backup heater running hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth installing a separate meter for the heat pump?+

Yes, it's a small investment that makes all future analysis more accurate.

What is a degree day?+

A metric describing how cold a period was. It allows months to be compared fairly.
