Lowering flow temperature safely

A heat pump's efficiency depends directly on how large a temperature difference it has to produce. The lower the flow temperature, the higher the estimated COP.

What's a realistic target

28–35 °C for underfloor heating, typically 40–48 °C with radiators on a cold day. If your system consistently needs over 50 °C, the cause is usually heating surface area or balancing.

How to lower it without losing comfort

Lower by 1 °C at a time and observe. Before lowering further, make sure every room gets flow and thermostats aren't fully closed.

Frequently asked questions

Does a lower flow temperature mean a colder house?+

Not necessarily. If the heating surface is sufficient, the same amount of heat reaches the house at a lower temperature, just over a longer running time.

How do I see the flow temperature?+

Most heat pumps show it on the control panel. If needed, it can be measured with a surface sensor on the pipe.
