Mitsubishi Electric — Ecodan and air-to-air setup

Mitsubishi Electric covers both air-to-air heat pumps and Ecodan air-to-water solutions. The two product groups need completely different approaches — for air-to-air, air distribution around the house matters most; for Ecodan, it's the water-side temperature.

Air-to-air: heat distribution matters more than the unit

An air-to-air unit's real efficiency depends on how well warm air spreads through the house. Closed doors and a permanently low fan speed mean the unit overheats locally while rooms further away stay cold — resulting in extra heat from electric radiators.

We recommend keeping the fan on automatic and avoiding frequent on/off switching.

Ecodan: water-side temperature and buffer volume

For Ecodan, the heating curve and buffer volume have the biggest impact. Too small a water volume combined with a modulating compressor causes short cycling, visible in the number of starts.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth turning an air-to-air heat pump off at night?+

We don't recommend it. A steady lower setpoint is usually more economical than switching off and then catching up at full power in the morning.

Why does Ecodan start very often?+

This can point to too small a water volume or too narrow a hysteresis. We recommend checking the buffer volume and the number of starts per day.
