Smart use of an air-to-air heat pump

An air-to-air heat pump is the cheapest way to cut the cost of an electrically heated home, but only if the warm air reaches where it's needed.

Steady mode beats on/off

The unit runs most efficiently at a steady, low capacity. Switching off and later catching up at full power ends up more expensive overall.

Air distribution around the house

Keep interior doors open or use a small fan to move air. Direct airflow downward, not straight at a wall.

Setpoint temperature

Set the unit's temperature so electric radiator thermostats stay closed most of the time. That's when the pump delivers the maximum saving.

Frequently asked questions

How cold can an air-to-air pump still work in?+

Modern units work even at −20 °C, but capacity and efficiency drop. Backup heat is common in very cold weather.

Is it worth keeping the fan at low speed?+

No. Auto mode or medium speed distributes heat better and reduces total consumption.
